5 Hacks to Resist The Fridge

I simply cannot exercise enough to make up for my love of Food Glorious Food. As it turns out, it is 80% what you put in your gob (mouth), and 20% the amount of exercise you do that determines your success in maintaining a healthy weight. Why can’t it be the reverse? And why is the answer to so many questions the 80/20 Rule?

Here are my Top 5 Hacks to Resist the Fridge. Some, admittedly, work better than others for me.

Resist the Urge: Easier said than done when the Siren Song of the fridge is calling you at 10 a.m. to last night’s pizza. Word to the wise, if you start with the pizza at 10 a.m and find yourself tucking into the Talenti Sea Salt Caramel Gelato before noon, it won’t end well. The best approach is to back away before doing anything you will regret.

Get Rid of the Temptation: I hate “wasting” anything and have found myself eating things I don’t need (and am not even enjoying!) rather than dare to “waste.” A friend of mine once said, “Isn’t it just as big of a waste to eat what you don’t need?” Truer words never were spoken. If you can’t readily give it to someone who needs it, bin it.

Portion Control: This one even makes me laugh. Honestly, who writes the diets where you count out ten raw almonds or 27 Cheez-Its? What, there isn’t a Cheez-Its diet?. If I am eating raw almonds, I am truly desperate. As for trigger foods (anything that tastes good), a box opened is a box eaten. Do as I say, not as I do. Measure it out!

Plan Your Menu: In the wise words of Benjamin Franklin, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”. If you are trying to eat healthier, you need to have a plan for what you will eat and the food available. Liquified organic greens (you don’t want to know how many packages of organic baby greens never saw a salad bowl in my home) in your crisper will not be of use. Plan your meals and shop accordingly.

Remove yourself from the scene: If at all possible, get yourself out of the house for a few minutes for a change of scenery and shift of your energy. You may still have the urge when you get back to your desk, but you also may not. Rarely works for me, definitely, benefits George, but hey, it is worth a try!

In reference to eating what we don’t need; a wise mother of three once explained to me how she lost weight. “I stopped being a garbage can for my kids plates.”
